At Milestone Infrastructure, we transport and dispose of different waste streams daily due to the nature of our highways maintenance and street lighting replacement contracts. We manage and monitor the sites and disposal routes that our operatives and supply chain use in line with Environment Agency guidelines.
The Milestone Infrastructure innovations and environment teams came together to digitise our records capture and reporting process, with the aim of increasing data quality and to enable Milestone Infrastructure to reduce any risks from waste transfer notes being incorrectly completed. This would then increase our ability to make faster, more informed decisions on materials recycling opportunities, as well as ensuring that any materials that could not be re-used or recycled could be taken to the nearest waste disposal location.
Utilising Microsoft’s Power Apps platform, a waste app has been developed to help automate how information is being captured on site and enabling the data to be viewed within a live database.
The platform has enabled Milestone Infrastructure to not only digitise the waste transfer note process but also greatly reduce the time it was previously taking to complete the forms and manage reporting requirements. Another benefit the platform has brought is the ability to automatically gather the locations from where tickets are completed using mobile devices.
Edward Godsiffe, Milestone Infrastructure Sustainability Manager, said: “The Waste App has been a great success and is helping improve how we manage our waste tickets, reducing time filling out paperwork by our operations teams as well as time spent administering all the data. We can use this data to look at how we can improve recycling rates and operational outputs by disposing of waste at different licensed facilities."
