Longest-running highways maintenance partnership in the UK

Somerset Highways is a partnership between Somerset County Council and Milestone Infrastructure.

Somerset County Council was one of the first local authorities in the UK to outsource highways maintenance. This is the longest-running highways maintenance partnership in the UK, starting in 1996. The previous contract commenced in 2010 and this is the fourth term for the team.

All of the maintenance works are designed by our team. The contract maintains 4,150 miles of carriageway and 1,360 miles of footways. It provides:

  • drainage schemes
  • footway reconstructions
  • earthworks schemes
  • safety fencing schemes
  • sign maintenance and road markings
  • grass and vegetation cutting
  • emergency response and winter service
  • drain jetting services and gully emptying
  • safety defect repairs

Flood Defence

Working with Somerset County Council and other key stakeholders, we also design and construct major flood-defence schemes, such as the Beer Wall flood alleviation works and the Muchelney Road raising scheme.

The contract also incorporates maintenance of the council’s and our own fleet of vehicles.
