Surrey street lighting

Milestone Infrastructure is undertaking street lighting upgrades in Surrey in a 50/50 public-private partnership with John Laing.

We have replaced or refurbished all Surrey County Council owned street lighting, which has involved around 89,000 lamp columns throughout Surrey.

Additionally, we will maintain all street lights and illuminated signs and bollards throughout the contract period.

Energy efficiency

The aim is to increase the energy efficiency of Surrey’s lighting assets, and increase its long-term durability.

The lights have been replaced with more energy efficient white light sources. Individual lighting columns can be remotely controlled from a new control centre in Guildford, leading to improved levels of service and significant environmental benefits.

Light performance

The lights are remotely monitored and managed. This means that, as well as being able to see how individual lighting columns are functioning, the light can be dimmed either automatically or manually. Coupled with new lighting technology, this will contribute to reduced energy consumption.

Local Benefits

This work will lead to savings of around 60,000 tonnes of carbon and 150 million kilowatt hours of electricity over the 25-year contract. This is expected to save council taxpayers at least £12 million over the life of the contract.
