Anna has been working as a Trainee Civil Engineer at Milestone Infrastructure since 2019. She currently works in the highways design team in Oxfordshire Highways, delivering a range of Active Travel projects to improve cycle routes in Oxford and across the county.

Her role includes preparing designs for the schemes using AutoCAD software, creating designer’s risk assessments to ensure health and safety is fully considered in the designs, developing budget cost estimates, and carrying out a range of surveys on site.

As part of her day-to-day role, she liaises directly with the client to discuss any issues she may have identified or any areas of improvement, such as the use of sustainable materials.

Anna is currently in her third year of a degree apprenticeship, studying for a Civil Engineering degree at Coventry University.  She spends one day each week at university, and the rest of the week with Milestone.  As part of the trainee programme, Anna rotates to different teams on the contract on an annual basis, allowing her to gain a broad range of experience in design, construction, and operations.

Anna is often going the extra mile, supporting other apprentices and graduates to become familiar with the processes and activities required to complete a project.  She is an active member of the Graduate and Trainee Forum. Anna is also a member of Milestone Infrastructure’s Inclusion and Diversity Network and often supports them in setting up events for their people. Anna’s passion for civil engineering has been evident in her volunteering as a project manager for local careers events to help promote civil engineering careers and opportunities with Milestone at local schools and colleges.

Anna said: “My apprenticeship has helped my self-confidence and I now actively participate in design meetings, meetings with clients and on wider business needs. Apprenticeships are the best way to learn as you benefit from mentoring from other members of the team and get to apply what you’ve learnt at university in your day-to-day work.”

Last year, Anna won an internal Health and Safety Award for her work on health and safety posters to help promote key health and safety initiatives within the depots.

Elio Astone, Technical Design Lead for Milestone’s Oxfordshire Highways contract, said: “Anna has not been afraid to step out of her comfort zone by making the most of the opportunities given to her. She has shown tremendous commitment to learn from others around her and apply her own knowledge to her role.”

The Oxfordshire Apprenticeship Awards is being streamed virtually this evening at 7pm. We wish Anna the very best of luck!
