On 26 March, Milestone Infrastructure will launch a new careers programme that helps armed forces leavers start a rewarding new career in the highways industry.

Milestone’s new Military Accelerated Programme (MAP) offers Service leavers a springboard into a new career. It provides enhanced training and mentorship to map the valuable skills acquired in military service across to a rewarding new career in highways.

Milestone Infrastructure is the UK’s number 1 choice for highways maintenance by road kms. On behalf of local authorities across the UK, Milestone looks after 24,000 miles of roads, 280,000 lighting assets and 20,000 miles of footways. Milestone is part of M Group Services, which employs over 11,000+ people at 216 locations in the UK and was recognized by the MOD as a Gold Award Employer.

Around 15,000 people leave the military and return to civilian life each year in the UK. This represents a huge pool of talent with invaluable skills to offer. However, armed forces leavers are 30% more likely to be unemployed than civilians, often due to challenges in mapping their skills to relevant civilian jobs.

Meanwhile, the highways industry is facing a skills shortage and needs to recruit new talent into the industry to ensure the safety of the UK’s highways for all road users.

Milestone’s MAP scheme recognises the skills gained via military service and translates them to equivalent highways experience, enabling service leavers to start a new career at a higher grade than they would otherwise be eligible for.

A tailored development plan and mentoring bridges the gap between lack of highways experience and requirements of the role.

Christopher Baker, Highways Supervisor for Milestone in Cambridgeshire, joined Milestone under the MAP scheme. Christopher served for 12 years with the 1 Royal Anglian in the infantry, specialising in 81mm mortar. His operational tours included Afghanistan and Mali and had numerous deployments around the world.

When Christopher joined Milestone, he had no highways employment experience but the valuable skills he’d gained in the military were recognised and he was encouraged to apply for a supervisor’s position.

Christopher said: “The Milestone Military Accelerated Programme helped me bridge the gap between leaving the military and starting a whole new civilian career. I didn’t have to start at the bottom because the skills, qualifications and experience that I brought from the military were recognised by MAP.”

The programme’s official launch takes place on 26 March 2024 at Drayton Park Golf Club, Oxfordshire. All Service leavers are invited to the MAP Launch Day – whether pre- or post-discharge and regardless of how many years since leaving the military. The launch day is a chance to find out how MAP works, attend a CV surgery and hear from ex-armed forces colleagues about life with Milestone.
