Underlining its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and environmental innovation, Milestone Infrastructure has been awarded the highest level of accreditation by Investors in the Environment (iiE).

iiE is the UK’s national environmental accreditation scheme, designed to help organisations reduce their impact on the environment.

Milestone was awarded ‘Green Level’ accreditation, having ‘demonstrated its commitment to minimising environmental impact and helping to set the standard for the environment’ across highways services delivered on behalf of Peterborough City Council.

Highlights include a 21% annual reduction in the use of electricity at its depot, a 14% reduction in the use of diesel in its plant and vehicles and an 16% annual reduction in carbon dioxide emissions – resulting in an overall reduction in its carbon footprint of 40% against a 2015 baseline.

Upon successful implementation of the iiE criteria, members are awarded with the recognised stamp of certification. With three levels of accreditation to aim for, Milestone has been awarded the highest ‘Green Level’ accreditation, having demonstrated its commitment to minimising environmental impact and helping to set the standard for sustainability.

The judging process requires organisations to reach key milestones to achieve each of the levels of the award, such as developing an environmental management system and reducing their resource use.

Last year, iiE member businesses collectively saved around 14,000 tonnes of CO2e (Carbon Dioxide Equivalent); equivalent to the total annual energy use of 2,267 UK houses or taking 3,467 cars off the road for a year.

Councillor Nigel Simons, Cabinet Member for Waste, Street Scene and the Environment, Peterborough City Council, said: “Milestone’s accreditation reinforces the council’s commitment to improving the environment for all residents, creating the UK’s Environment Capital and is a further step towards making Peterborough net-zero carbon by 2030.”

Milestone’s Contract Manager, Keith McWilliams commented “We are delighted to achieve the ‘Green Level’ accreditation which recognises our commitment to the environment. There is still much work to do but we are looking forward to working with Peterborough City Council to deliver its 2030 net carbon zero ambitions and embed further environmental best practice into the highway service.”

A spokesperson for Investors in the Environment said: “Businesses can have a significant impact on the environment, that is why iiE is working with organisations to support and advise them on how they can make positive environmental improvements.

“Milestone, through achieving the investors in the environment accreditation, has demonstrated its commitment to reducing its impact on the environment and embedding sustainability throughout their processes.

“We were impressed with the management of their performance, with regular meetings, training needs identified, and engagement with colleagues at all levels which has enabled them to reduce their overall carbon footprint by 40% against a 2015 baseline.”
