M Group Services and its operating businesses want to empower and inspire the younger generation. Our priority is to create an environment in which our people feel valued, supported and fulfilled. That is why we have a variety of apprenticeships and graduate schemes on offer.

As part of this commitment to providing opportunities to young people, Milestone Infrastructure recently welcomed four new apprentices to the street lighting team.

George Kang, Finley Williams, Max Benham and Johnathan Holiday will be training for the next two years to gain their Highway Electrical Maintenance and Installation Operative Level 2 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).

The four apprentices recently met at our training provider’s school in Norwich to complete their first week of learning. This was the first of eight off-site electrical testing weeks, which they must complete to qualify.

During their first off-site week, our apprentices were introduced to some of the Milestone team and completed various Highway Electrical Skills Academy (HESA) courses.

These were:

  • Health, Safety and Environment at Work
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
  • Electrical Safety
  • Moving and Handling Highways Electrical
  • Interpretation of Legislation and Standards
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Hazards and Risk Assessment
  • Avoiding Danger from Underground Services

To qualify, the apprentices must complete at least 20% of their contracted hours in off-the-job training. This can take the form of practical learning such as job shadowing, mentoring and industry visits, carrying out simulation exercises and online learning as well as attending courses and workshops.

Over their two years, the apprentices will complete more HESA training and have the opportunity to discuss their experiences.

George Kang, Apprentice on the Surrey Street Lighting contract said: “Milestone has been very welcoming and caring. I have learnt so much in the last few weeks. I enjoyed going to the training school and found the courses interesting.

“Since starting with Milestone I have been able to go on-site and witness various work activities such as column installation and low voltage jointing. I have really enjoyed the experience so far.”

The apprentices are being offered plenty of opportunities to gain additional qualifications. They have all recently done their Highway Electrical Health and Safety Assessment which will allow them to be registered on a trainee card to the Highway Electrical Registration Scheme (HERS). They will also be attending courses such as Emergency First Aid at Work and Mobile Elevating Works Platform (MEWPS) training.

Once they have completed their Level Two qualifications, there is an option to complete the Servicing Highway Electrical Systems Level Three NVQ diploma.

Adrian Cooke, Managing Director at Milestone said: “We are delighted to welcome a new cohort of apprentices to our street lighting sector. It’s wonderful to be welcoming newcomers to this specialist industry. We are really proud that they have decided to start their careers with Milestone and hope they enjoy learning from our highly skilled and forward-thinking experts.

“The apprentices will be joining teams managing over 280,000 assets across our various contracts.

“On behalf of everyone at Milestone we wish you the best of luck in your training.”

To further underscore our commitment to inspiring, attracting and employing young talent across the Group we are currently developing 260 apprentices, with a further 80 to be recruited this year.
